Various Artists - Brian 50
8" Lathe cut record and CD(50)/CD only(200)

Brian the music club was started almost five years ago as an excuse for seven guys to meet at the pub and to be rude about each others tastes in music. Now we are at our 50th meeting and it has transformed into something wonderful.

To celebrate our 50th meeting I wanted to create something really special so I wrote to friends, family and past contributors asking them to write something to join us in our celebration. The result is more than an odds and sods compilation, it is a selection of songs which could happily form five EPs in their own rights and yet flows as one beautiful whole. Machinefabriek has provided two very special tracks, Ax, which was written for Brian 50 and is also featured on the Nerf record, and Nerf (Brian Version) which is exclusive to this release. Peter Broderick has written a stunning lullaby to the three Brian's he has known. There is also a beatbox intro, electro acoustic pop songs, field recordings, solo piano recorded to an old tape and of course some straight forward rock.

Brian 50 includes an 8" lathe cut record with a song by every artist and two locked grooves, a CD with even more music, a hand drawn hand made sleeve and a history of Brian the music club. The release is limited to 50 hand numbered copies of which only 30 are available for sale. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed making it. Jim Lad - Brian Records.

A CD only repress of Brian 50 is also available in a run of 200. It is a miniature version of the original and contains 12 of the tracks from the original CD and is available here in the UK and here in the US.

Double 5" Lathe cut record (50)

When Machinefabriek offered a pair of lovely Jazz standards by him and Gareth I had only heard of Gareth through his work with Machinefabriek and didn't really know anything about him. I made up a load of stuff about him for artist page and soon discovered his favourite fast food was Mexican (after suggesting he preffered Maccy Ds to Burger King). This release will be a double 5" with four short tracks each named after a taco stand spot. In Gareths own words "This whole thing about taco stands is kind of funny, but works on a lot of levels. They're crazy places. No sense of class or social level... you can have the local hipsters, the dealers, the A list celebrities and the family coming back later from staying at the in laws all in the same place." The music is dark and brooding yet gentle and uplifting as if imagining a place where all these people come together. Now sold out.

He Man Theme
Runge Kutta Feat He Man - He Man Theme
5 1/4" Floppy Disc (40)

Runge Kutta has teamed up with the vocal powerhouse that is He Man to provide a much needed vaccine for the ailing world of hip hop. In He Mans own words he hasn't come to kill hip hop but to save it. Of course it may be kill or cure. Whatever the outcome this record could be essential to the future of mankind as we know it. For this reason alone it is being made available in stupidly limited numbers (40) on the most stupid format since I don't know what (thats right it will be released on 5 1/4" floppy disc (check here for the knowledge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floppy_disk) but don't worry an MP3 will be chucked in for the price). Pick one of these up and know that once more you and your rap records can sleep well at night.

MASSIVE APOLOGIES - The sleeve contains a spelling error (those of you who know me won't be in the least bit surprised, I really did go to special lessons at school, the sleeve notes are absolutely factual!) the Tim Friese-Greene car crash mix uses the track "semantics got me caned", not canned as it states. Really sorry, especially to Tim who was so gracious in allowing us to use his track in the first place. That said, we are convinced that this error has profound poetic significance, given the epic struggle within which Runge Kutta find  themselves locked.....have they won the battle or the war? You be the judge.....

5" Lathe cut record (100)

Two beautiful, brooding pieces fussing drone and jazz into one spine chilling whole. At just two minutes each these tracks brim with sorrowful emotion whilst sounding completely original.

I grew up knowing and loving these tracks (my dad loves Frank/Miles/Dylan thats about it) and they sound just like those beautiful childhood memories and yet totally contemporary at the same time. The second in the series of 5" lathe cut records. Limited to 100 copies. Gareth Davies had the following to say.

"This is part of a bigger project I'm doing which is, to all extents and purposes, reworking/looking at the jazz standard repertoire. The idea being that since the 60s there has been very little experimentation with standards. Think about Miles Davis, Coltrane, Dolphy and the like were doing, it's incredible, they took popular songs...show tunes and turned them into something completely different. Fantastic stuff. But ever since that it's almost as if things have become stuck and there's no movement. That's not to say there is not great playing, there is, it's just that what is actually being done is more of the same thing."

A totally beautiful and mystifying review is here. Now sold out but MP3 available through machinefabriek.nu.

Clem Leek - The Plan
5" Lathe cut record (100)

Clem came to my attention through a friend I met through the label. Then out of the blue Clem emailed me to ask for a Nils record. Not being one to miss an opportunity, I got chatting to Clem, turns out we have a bit in common (both lived in Bath (although Clem has recently moved away), both like music, both go to the porter, a great little pub).

I recently asked Clem if he would be interested in getting involved. He responded by sending me two amazing Piano miniatures. They appear on this tiny release, with a tiny remix by Danny Norbury.

5" Lathe cut record (200)

A record shrouded in mystery but when it comes out you can say I was there, I knew about this since before anything was even known. You can't get much cooler than that. (oh and it should be number three (or four, or five) in a series of 5" lathe cut records).

Some of the mystery has been lifted. Two amazing musicians will be fusing their infinite talents and squashing them down to 2 two minutes sides. Expect something incredible.

That something incredible is now here. I am Darkness, I am Light and I am Light, I am Darkness are two miniatures filled with mystery and beauty. Packaged in the slightest of sleeves and a clear disc this is a record for early mornings and late nights.

Accompanied by the most simple minimal video by our friend Ralph Etter who brings a whole new spin to this simply delightful record. (Sold Out)

Johan Working Cover
Johan G Winther - TBC
8" Lathe Cut Record and CD (50)

Wow I can’t believe we’ve made it to our tenth release and what a cracker. Johan has written 5 broken but beautiful tracks. For me these tracks capture the joy and frustration of being in love whilst having a baby. They offer mystifying beauty and shards of sonic terror in equal measure. To messy to be pop, to dirty to be folk, to beautiful to be noise these are not an easy listen but are all the better for it. I have a small handful of records in my collection that resonate with me in this way and I am constantly searching for more, so to be able to release this record is something of a pleasure and an honour. I truly hope this record will move you in the same way it moves me. The record is limited to 50 measly copies, and will come on 8” with MP3 provided when ordered.
But that’s not all. This project is about collaborating. Everyone who buys a copy will also be involved in the making process. Inspired by a book I bought about commercially released records with handmade/defaced covers (http://homemade.sleeves.free.fr/) I want everyone to design their own sleeve and send it in, responding to the music as they hear it. The sleeve should be a single sheet of A3 double sided which will be folded in the house style. More info will accompany the initial issue of MP3s. I will then shuffle the sleeves and send the final record out in someone else’s sleeve.
The release will also feature a perfect bound full colour A6 book on heavy paper collecting all the sleeves in miniature.
But we are not done, oh no. The final release will feature the 5 original tracks on 8” lathe cut record and a bonus CD with the original tracks plus remixes/reinterpretations by Machinefabriek and Clem Leek. I would also like to invite you to submit your own cover/remix/reinterpretation/relocating of the music and the best will also feature on the CD.
If you would like a copy of this amazing release please email me. As numbers are limited (50) please wait for me to confirm your email has been received before paypalling me. Cost is £12 in the UK, £13 in Europe and £14 for the rest of the world and MP3s will be issued on the official day of release (Friday 4th November). You then have 2 months to create your sleeve and send it in (originals only please, no scans). I will send out reminder emails as the deadline approaches but I won’t hassle you for your sleeve. If you choose to not send in a sleeve I will create some simple banterish sleeves which will be used instead (with words like lazy, sluggard, slacker etc on J). You are not required to send in a song but if you would like to do this as well that would be fantastic. If you have never done anything like this before and would like some ideas I would be more than happy to suggest something. When the records finally arrive back from New Zealand I will pack these up and send them out. No guarantee when that will be (typically 3 months but can be more, can be less).
Final thing to note: Due to the nature of the project there will be no spare copies and so if your copy is lost in the post I will sadly not be able to replace it. If you would like it sent special delivery then you will need to pay the extra/above at time of posting. Hope that’s OK.

Various Artists - Brian Presents The Brian Big Band

Details are still sketchy on this one as Brian don't even know Brian records exist, but when they find out I am sure they will ALL want to contribute a song to this follow up compilation to Brian 50.

Soundtrack to a short story

If you thought details were sketchy on the last release they are even sketchier here so let me tell you what I know. There will be short stories, there will be short songs, there will be 5" lathe cut records, there might be a painting, there might be a book, some of the artists have already featured and some haven't but believe me when I say this little series will be really, really special (oh and if you would like to be involved drop me a line).
